IMPORTANT - PLEASE
READ CAREFULLY
- Please note seed is a live product which depends on many important related
grower skills such as proper planting time, seed depth, and type of soil,
watering, proper use of fertilizers, weed controls, fungicides, insecticides,
disease free soil, and reasonable weather conditions during the growing
period. Germination is affected by such
factors as temperature, moisture content, light intensity and contamination of
planting media. Although we do everything possible to get seeds to you in the
best possible condition far exceeding legal requirements and will provide as
much help as possible, these factors are totally outside of our control and once
you receive the seeds its over to you.
Consequently, we can take no responsibility for the suitability to your
local conditions of any variety offered, the indicative cultivation advice
provided or ultimately the varieties performance. As such you should seek local advice to
carefully ensure your local conditions and the time of season are appropriate
to the variety purchased.
Papaver somniferum 2013
Sadly after the worst spring in
50 years, not all of the poppies that I planned to have available, there will
be, no China blue, China white, Afghan red or Merck pharmaceutical Tasmanian
poppies this year sorry, and there will be a shortage of Izmir Afghan.
Merck pharmaceutical Tasmanian
Available from September 2013
NEW: 'Starry Night'
Fast to germinate, one of the
first to be sown and one of the last to flower, pretty light green fleshly
serrated leaves, flowers almost black/purple with pink tipped petals, on close
inspection the flowers shimmer in the light, plants grow four to five feet
tall, a total joy see, only one to three flowers per plant so plant the on
mass, magical, unusual and rare.
SOLD OUT!
[Notes: Starry Night is an
exotic and magnificent multi-colour Papaver somniferum flower, extending from
shades of red, purple, black, and florescent pink, and originally obtained back
in 2011 from poppyseeddreams.com but has
been sadly out of stock ever since. I will have them available towards the end
of the summer.]
'Starry
Night'
British Pharmaceutical [ex. Oxfordshire, UK]
Fast to
germinate, and one of the quickest to flower that I have grown, only a single
flower per plant, growth and flowers very slimier to that of the Tasmanian
poppies, plants three to four feet in height, neat serrated leaves, and smooth
large frosted egg shaped pods. Seeds originally collected from pods from a
field in Oxfordshire by a friend, back in 2011, sadly most of the seeds in the
pods were a little undeveloped and failed to germinate, but I did manage to
grow three plants in 2012 and save some viable seed, so I was able to grow a
nice amount this year, I will have seed to sell at the end of the summer for
anyone interested.
300+
seeds £3.50 / 1500+ £4.75 Available now
Notes:
Large swathes of the English countryside are being turned over to
pharmaceutical grade Papaver somniferum - with the full backing of the
Government. Farmers are cultivating the poppies to combat a critical shortage
of morphine in NHS hospitals, and are finding it a lucrative crop. In the UK,
the Home Office has granted pharmaceutical company Macfarlan Smith a licence to
harvest the poppies, and now they are being grown in tens of farms across
Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire. The move aims to ease the
severe lack of diamorphine that has hit the NHS, and the rest of the world, for
several years.

Poppies
are a spring sown break-crop recognised under the single farm payment scheme
and are an ideal entry to first wheat.
All crops are authorised by the home office. Macfarlan Smith manages the
agronomy of the crop as well as harvesting the crop using specialist equipment.
We are currently growing poppies in Dorset, Hampshire, and Oxfordshire &
Lincolnshire.

'Hungarian pharmaceutical'
Last
year I was sent some fantastically hard to find Hungarian pharmaceutical grade
poppies, sadly I only had enough room left to grow two of them 1# [Etaz] and 2#
[Sahir], both were good strong vigorous strains. This year I have made room for
all three, sowing the 3# [Alcaliber] first.
300+
seeds £3.50 / 1500+ seeds £4.75
'Hungarian pharmaceutical #1 ‘ETAZ’
Fast to
germinate and moderately fast to flower, strong plants to six feet or more in
height, large flowers white with purple base spots through to purple with
darker purple base spots, large ribbed pumpkin shaped pods, similar to the
other two in flower alone, very nice poppy.
Note:
grow this poppy last year and wasn't planning to grow it again his year, but it
sold so well I nearly sold all my own stash by mistake, ended up with only a
few hundred seeds, so I sowed them only to restock my own stash, but should
still have some to spare.
'Hungarian
pharmaceutical #1 ‘ETAZ’
'Hungarian

'Papaver somniferum 'Afghan' [ex. Arghandab, Afghanistan]
Got a
hold of these little gems last year, straight from Afghanistan, I was late
sowing them last year and they didn't do very well, weedy little plants up to
two feet in height with small pods, they were the first to be sown this spring
and needless to say, they have done a lot better, four feet in height, two to
three flowers per plant, very delicate pink and white flowers, as always there
will be various in colours, from red and white to pure white, medium sized
pods.

'Burma Giants'
Bought
these under the impression that they were the same are the Burma Golden
Triangle poppies that I have grown before, well their not, similar but
defiantly not the same plant, fast, strong plants, said to be able grow to ten
feet in height, large pastel coloured flowers and large ribbed pods.
300+
seeds £3.50
'Burma
Giants'
'China Pink'
Plants
to three feet in height, flowers come in all shades of pink through to red,
medium sized round pods, very pretty, but seem to struggle a bit with cold
weather.
SOLD OUT UNTIL SEPTEMBER!
'China
Pink'
'China Red x White Bush'
Very
robust poppies to at least 6 feet, flowers very large striped and pink, large
round pods, very hardy with cold and pests, a true beautiful freak.
SOLD OUT!
Notes:
This is from a group of self-sown poppy, which managed to over winter and grow
into six foot mutant, both the China Pink and the Bush Poppies are very hardy
and both share the same type of foliage. China Reds grow to about 4-5 feet tall
with large red through to pink flowers with round medium sized pods; White Bush
Poppies grow to about 3 feet tall with flowers that resemble that of the
Tasmanian poppies, medium sized round pods. With its height I took it to be a
self-sown China Red, but I have now come to the conclusion that this is a
cross.

OTHER PAPAVER NEW FOR 2013
Papaver bracteatum 'Armenian Poppy'
Papaver
bracteatum, also known as the Iranian poppy, is a sturdy perennial poppy with
large deep red flowers up to 8 inches (20 cm) across on stiff stalks up to 4
feet (1.22 metres) high with a prominent black spot near the base of the
petals. It is related to the commonly cultivated oriental poppy, Papaver
orientale. Non-horticultural use of this species is for the production of
thebaine, which is commercially converted to codeine and semi-synthetic
opiates. Papaver bracteatum does not contain morphine, codeine or any other
narcotic alkaloids in significant amounts. Oripavine was reported in minute
traces but would not exert a relevant activity.

Papaver glaucum ‘Tulip Poppy’
Papaver
glaucum is a native of the Near East where it is usually found at high
elevations on sandy rocky mountainsides. Turkey Syria, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and
Iran are all classic Tulip poppy territory. It is closely related to Papaver
somniferum and has the classic poppy markings – a stunning scarlet colour with
clear black blotches on each petal. There are two main differences, firstly its
size; it is quite diminutive in relation to its large cousins, growing to only
45-50cm. Its round, smooth pods are correspondingly smaller, at around 2cm long
and the leaves are more deeply lobed than the leaves of P. somniferum, the
second main difference is one that makes it quite unique in the poppy world;
the inner petals are not flat but stay upright. This difference has earned it
the common name “The Tulip Poppy”
