NICOTIANA 'TOBACCO SEEDS'

Nicotiana seeds will usually germinate within 10 days. Seeds will normally only germinate with light so surface sow. Sow Nicotiana seeds on the surface of a well-drained seed sowing mix at between 15°C - 22°C, very easy from seed.

Nicotiana Clevelandii

Nicotiana Clevelandii is a wild tobacco found in the arid regions of the South western United States. N. Clevelandii was cultivated by Native Americans in the western states; along with the wider spread N. Quadravalvis. It is very hardy and drought tolerant.  Blooms appear about 3 weeks after transplanting. It continues to grow and produce beautiful trumpet shaped white flowers throughout the summer with occasional watering. This California native was grown from wild collect seed in San Luis Obispo County in 2011.

Bright yellow, tubular shaped 1 1/2" flowers in large, pendant clusters. Graceful tree or shrub to 20 feet, with striking glaucous-blue foliage. Argentina. Grown outdoors in the Southwest, or as a stately tub plant in the North. Sometimes grown as an annual in the border for the bold foliage. Valued by Indians for smoking, chewing, drinking, and medicinal uses. Said to contain only trace nicotine, its major alkaloid is anabasine, which is similar in action, but a bit less toxic. Highly toxic to aphids. Hardy to about -9°C [15°F].

Easily grown as an annual in the North, perennial in California and the South. Introduced into horticulture even before the taxonomists described it as a new species in 2002.

Annual species 3–6′+ tall, hardy to zone 9, lanceolate leaves that give off a pungent tobacco smell, 1.5″ tubular white flowers, native to western United States, from seed originally grown from seeds collected from plants growing along a creek bed, hills east of Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co. the main native tobacco that was once widely cultivated by numerous tribes, but has become scarce in recent times. For medicinal and religious purposes the leaves were smoked or chewed with lime made from burnt shells. Surface sow seeds, keep most and protected from slugs, not very frost hardy.

‘Ancient’

This is another rustica from ‘Sacred succulents’, but this one comes with an interest bit of history behind it, this is what the ‘Sacred succulents’ website:  This seed came to us from a friend who received it as a very special wedding gift. The seed was discovered in a 1000 year old urn at an archaeological dig on Vancouver Island. An amazing relic, it has proven highly viable, we grew out robust plants to 3′. This is the first generation seed from this ancient sacred tobacco.

This is a monster, massive crinkled leaves, and it has the biggest flowers that I have seen on a rustica, which give way to large round seed pods, plants grow between 4 – 5 feet in height, and need to be staked to keep them from falling over, they need lots of water if you want them to grow big, a fantastic and historic alternative to the common Rustica that is available, I found this plant great fun to grow.

Annual or short-lived perennial from the Andes.  Long white blossoms hang down in pendulous clusters and emit a heady-sweet jasmine-like fragrance. Flowers continuously until the frost.  Grows to seven feet high.  Leaves are large, oblanceolate, and cure well for smoking. Also known as “Only the Lonely”.

New breed of dark air cured tobacco with low nicotine and spicy flavour. Developed in Germany, this vigorous early season grower performs very well in cooler climates producing a dark green heavy weight leaf. It has closely spaced leaves and grows to 5 feet, its low dense growth make it very resistant to adverse weather conditions.  Mature plants have some frost resistance.

Heirloom tobacco grown in Guatemala by the Mopan Mayan natives, who are direct descendants of the ancient Mayas, It is a primitive plant type and is likely the true genetic strain grown by their ancestors. It grows to 5' in height and reaches maturity in 50-55 days. The leaves average 12" wide by 16" long, cure to a light brown, and have a nicotine content of 2.8%.

Unclassified tobacco, It grows to over 6 feet in height and has very dark green leaves. producing a fair amount of tobacco, but its most striking feature is its large magenta red flowers which contrast against the deep green leaves, a good dual purpose plant as a tobacco producer or ornamental.

The exact classification of this tobacco is unknown, but it is probably a descendant of a white stemmed Burley. Little is known about its history or development but it is said to have originated in Brazil. The leaves are long and pointed, and can be from 30 to 36 inches in length and up to 20 inches wide. It grows to over 7 feet in height. It is a late maturing type with blooms occurring at 90-95 days. The leaves turn a lemon yellow as they ripen and it is very easy to cure. The leaves air cure a light brown and produce a medium flavoured mild smoke. Some growers report a slight mint or menthol taste, while others do not. This could be due to local soils or growing conditions.

Usually used mixed with milder types, Now grown by only a few families, the leaves are prepared by prolonged pressing and fermenting, into an almost black tobacco which commands high prices, Germinates in 2 weeks warm.

This is the rarest commercial tobacco in North America, and one of the most highly-prized.

'Desert Tobacco'

Desert tobacco is used by the Indians of the southwest, the Tarahumara call it bawaraka or wipake and use it as an analgesic, it is also known as tabaco del coyote, 'tobacco of the coyote.' The Seri Indians of northern Mexico call this wild tobacco species hapis casa, 'that which is smoked, rots,' and believe that the plant has magical powers. The small, narrow leaves were apparently ritually collected and then slowly dried. The effects are said to be very strong.
